Hiatus hernia repair / Fundoplication / Anti-reflux surgery

hiatus hernia / sliding hernia

Hiatus hernia surgery / anti-reflux surgery or fundoplication surgery is a set of procedures that are used to treat GORD/GERD.  Generally, patients who have these procedures have been unable to get satisfactory relief with medications alone.

The procedure is performed through 4 or 5 small incisions.  The hernia contents (often the upper part of the stomach) are brought back into the abdomen.  The oesophageal hiatus is tightened with sutures (and often mesh to reinforce) to prevent a recurrence.  Depending on the circumstances, the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is then fashioned into a wrap to prevent future reflux from the stomach.

Dr Cocco can discuss this with you in further detail if it is appropriate for your circumstances.
