Revisional bariatric & Band Removal Surgery
(removal of bands, change from sleeve to bypass, reversal of bypass surgery)
There may be reasons for a patient to have another procedure years following their initial surgery. Issues with gastric bands, reflux issues, weight gain or other reasons can lead patients to seek a change. Dr Cocco can advise on what is possible and what options are available for your particular circumstances.
Gastric band removal
Gastric bands can develop complications over time including slippage, erosion into the stomach wall, or port problems. When a band is no longer working well — or is causing harm — removal is indicated. Dr Cocco is able to remove the band and, in most cases, perform a conversion to an alternative procedure such as a gastric sleeve or bypass in a single operation.
Who may need revision surgery?
You may be a candidate for revision surgery if you have experienced: inadequate initial weight loss, significant weight regain after bariatric surgery, band slippage or erosion, reflux or swallowing difficulties related to a previous procedure, or you wish to convert from one procedure to another.
What does revision surgery involve?
Each revision is individual and depends on the original procedure, current anatomy, and goals. Dr Cocco will review your history, imaging, and investigations thoroughly before recommending an approach. Options may include sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y bypass, or OAGB as conversion procedures.
Recovery
Recovery is similar to primary bariatric procedures, though individual variation is greater depending on complexity. Dr Cocco will provide tailored guidance at your consultation.
There are more options for weight management all the time, your GP can provide advice, or Dr Cocco is happy to discuss your concerns at consultation.
