You're Not Alone In This

Obesity is a complex medical condition, influenced by a range of biological, genetic, behavioural, environmental and social factors.

If you've spent years being told to "just eat less and move more", only to find your body fighting back every time, that's not a failure on your part. It's how obesity works.

Medical weight loss may help to calm “food noise” for some patients, and Dr Cocco may offer this approach to patients with lower BMIs, those not ready for surgery or those who wish to try a non-surgical approach first.

Meet Dr Nicholas Cocco, FRACS

Dr Nicholas Cocco is a bariatric and general surgeon dedicated to thorough, personalised care, backed by strong credentials and a genuinely collaborative approach.

Dr Cocco is:

  • FRACS qualified, trained across NSW, the ACT and Victoria, with further training in transplant, vascular and laparoscopic surgery

  • An active member of ANZMOSS and IFSO, the leading bodies for obesity and metabolic surgery

  • The principal investigator for the Bariatric Surgical Registry at Macquarie University Hospital, helping track outcomes and improve care

  • Committed to team-based care, working closely with referring GPs and a team of dietitians, psychologists, nurses and anaesthetists

  • Experienced in bariatrics, having worked with Sydney Bariatric Clinic (2020–2025) and Macquarie University Hospital's Healthy Weight Clinic (2024–present)

  • Available at several Sydney locations, including Westmead, Norwest and Macquarie University Hospital

What you can expert

Choosing surgery is a big decision. It’s worth taking your time and choosing a surgeon who is a good fit for you. Along with genuine experience and credentials from recognised bodies, look for a surgeon who takes the time to understand you and offers ongoing support.

1. Initial Consult

Meet with Dr Cocco for a comprehensive 45-minute clinical evaluation. Discuss suitable surgical pathways, and a clear review of costs, medical risks, and recovery expectations.

2. Preparation

Before your procedure, collaborate with our dietitians and allied health team. Optimise your nutritional health and establishes a structured care plan tailored to your medical history.

3. Proceedure

Surgeries are performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques at accredited Sydney hospitals. Patients typically stay 1–2 nights for post-operative monitoring before discharging home to recover.

4. Ongoing Support

Your recovery includes structured clinical follow-up for at least 12 months. Our team provides routine medical and nutritional reviews to safely support your long-term health transition.

Not all procedures are suitable for all patients. Risks, benefits, alternatives and expected recovery are discussed during consultation.

Are you a candidate?

Weight management is a deeply individualised process, and understanding your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a helpful first step.

Your BMI provides a general screening clinical measure of weight relative to your height, helping to indicate whether medical or surgical interventions may be appropriate for your health profile. However, BMI is only a baseline indicator and does not replace a complete clinical evaluation.
